Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal, and one of the oldest cities in Europe. The city is located in the westernmost region of mainland Europe where river Tagus, the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula, flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

According to legends, the city was founded by the mythical hero Ulysses and was first inhabited by pre-Celtic tribes during the Neolithic period. The Phoenicians laid its foundations and named it ‘Alis Ubbo’ (‘safe port’) after which the city was ruled by the Romans and the Visigoths, after the fall of the Roman Empire. The city was captured by the Moors in 714 AD and reconquered by Christian crusaders at the behest of Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal in 1147 AD.
